What is a Kitchen Display System?

A Kitchen Display System (KDS) is a digital screen in your kitchen that replaces paper tickets and verbal shouting. Instead of a printer spitting out slips that get lost, smeared, or stuck together during a rush, every order appears on a screen the moment it's placed.

Think of it as a command center for your kitchen. Chefs see exactly what needs to be prepared, in what order, and how long each ticket has been waiting. No more squinting at handwritten orders. No more "did table 7 want extra spicy or no onion?"

In traditional Indian restaurants, the chaos of peak hours means lost tickets, wrong orders, and frustrated customers. A KDS eliminates all of that by giving your kitchen one source of truth — always visible, always accurate, always real-time.

How Servly KDS Works

From customer's phone to chef's screen in under a second. Here's the entire order lifecycle.

01

Customer Places Order

Customer scans a QR code at their table, browses your menu, and confirms their order. Or your staff enters it through the dashboard.

02

Order Hits the KDS

The order appears instantly on your kitchen screen with table number, item details, and any special instructions. An audio alert ensures nothing is missed.

03

Chef Marks In-Progress

With a single tap, the chef marks the order as "Cooking." The elapsed timer tracks preparation time so you know exactly which orders are falling behind.

04

Done — Served

Order marked as "Ready." Waitstaff can see it on their screen too. The order clears from the queue, and the billing system is updated automatically.

KDS Features

Every feature your kitchen needs to run smoothly during the busiest hours.

Live Order Queue

Every order appears the instant it's placed. Orders are arranged chronologically so your kitchen always knows what to prepare next. No pile-ups, no confusion.

Elapsed Time Tracker

Every order card shows a running timer from the moment it was placed. Timers change colour as they age — green under 3 minutes, amber at 5, red past 8. Spot delays before customers do.

Priority Flags

VIP table? Large party? Rush order? Flag any ticket so your kitchen prioritises it. Flagged orders jump to the top of the queue with a visual indicator your team can't miss.

Table Grouping

Multiple items from the same table are automatically grouped into one card. Your kitchen prepares everything together so the entire table's food arrives at once — not staggered over 15 minutes.

Station-Based Views

Split your kitchen into stations — tandoor, wok, grill, desserts. Each station sees only their items. The tandoor chef doesn't scroll past biryani orders to find their naan tickets.

Sound Alerts

A distinct audio chime plays when a new order arrives, so your team doesn't need to constantly stare at the screen. Different sounds for new orders, priority items, and delayed tickets.

Which Restaurants Need a KDS?

If your kitchen processes more than a handful of orders per hour, you'll benefit. Here are the types where KDS makes the biggest difference.

🍔

QSR / Fast Food

Speed is everything. A KDS eliminates the gap between counter and kitchen. Orders appear instantly, prep times are tracked, and throughput goes up without adding staff.

High volume, tight margins
🍽

Casual Dine-In

Multi-course meals for multiple tables mean complex coordination. Table grouping ensures all items for a party arrive together, and priority flags handle VIP tables elegantly.

Coordination-heavy

Cloud Kitchens

No front-of-house means the KDS is your only interface with incoming demand. Station views let you route delivery orders to the right prep line without a single phone call.

Multi-brand, multi-line

Cafes / Bakeries

Baristas juggling espresso shots with sandwich orders lose track fast. A KDS separates drink and food queues, each with its own timer and alert sound.

Split workflows
🍚

Dhabas / Street Food

High-volume, low-margin outlets with limited space. Mount a phone on the wall and you have a KDS. No thermal printer, no paper rolls, no maintenance headaches.

Budget-friendly
🍷

Fine Dining

Course timing is everything. The KDS tracks which course each table is on and alerts the kitchen when it's time to fire the next round. Precision without the shouting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need special hardware for a KDS?
No. Servly KDS runs on any device with a browser — an old tablet, a phone, or a laptop. No proprietary hardware required. If you have a spare Android tablet gathering dust in a drawer, that's your KDS screen.
Can multiple kitchen stations see different orders?
Yes. You can configure station-based views so each section of your kitchen sees only the items relevant to them. Your tandoor station sees only tandoor items, the Chinese wok sees stir-fries, and so on. Each station runs independently on its own device.
What happens if the internet goes down?
If the connection drops briefly, orders already on screen remain visible. Your kitchen keeps working. Once reconnected, any queued orders appear automatically. No orders are lost — they're held in the server and synced as soon as the connection is restored.
Does the KDS work with QR ordering only?
The KDS displays all orders — whether placed via QR code by customers or entered manually by your staff through the Apollo Dashboard. Both paths feed into the same kitchen queue.
How much does the KDS cost?
The KDS is included in all Servly plans starting at ₹599/month. No additional hardware fees. No per-order charges. No hidden costs. You get the full KDS with all features — live queue, timers, station views, sound alerts — on every plan.
